Do I have to buy homeowners insurance if I own a home?

No, you do not have to buy homeowners insurance if you own a home.  Although if you have a mortgage you will usually be required by them to carry insurance.  This is done to protect their investment in case your home is damaged by fire, storm or some other disaster.

Even if you do not have a mortgage and are not required to buy homeowners insurance most insurance agents will recommend that you carry insurance.  Your home is a huge investment and you don’t want to risk losing it all.
